Unfortunately, due to the impact of a significant number of staff being absent following the current government guidelines around self-isolation, it is with regret that we are forced to close a day earlier than the majority of schools nationally. We will close the school by the end of the school day on Thursday 19th March. The safety and welfare of pupils and adults at Kilmersdon is our first priority in making this decision.
In order that our families have time to make alternative childcare arrangements, we have created a solution to enable us to operate with a very small cohort of staff for tomorrow. Due to the short notice, for those unable to make alternative arrangements, the school will be open from 8.50am to 3.10pm before subsequently closing until further notice. Parents should be aware that a significant number of our support staff and key adults are absent including our EYFS and Year 1 teachers. If you are able to keep your child at home today, this would reduce the burden on the school and would be recorded as an authorised absence.
We will make every effort to ensure consistency of provision whilst we are closed, to minimise the impact on the children’s education during this unprecedented situation. From Friday onwards, there will be daily activities for your child to engage with on our school website. We completely understand that every family situation will be different and only ask that children and families do what they can.
We invite all our families to send work in via the school email address firstname.lastname@example.org and we will publish selected pieces each week on our continuing newsletter in order to celebrate work done at home, as well as give out virtual certificates to celebrate on a Friday.
Initially, home work will be posted on Monday, Wednesday and Friday by 10am by class teachers. The work provided will be uploaded onto the year group pages of the school website. This work will consist of English, Maths and one other piece of work from the curriculum. We would also like the children to continue with regular reading and will signpost towards online programs to support learning, for example in mathematics.
There is no replacement for your child receiving quality in-person teaching from the class teacher, but the work provided is an interim solution to ensure that your child has continued access to the curriculum. We have
also considered the government’s announcement with regard to assessments and exams. Whilst this applies to all schools, we will take time to celebrate and value the hard work and excellent progress of all our children and ensure their potential and achievement is clearly shared with their new classes and schools, as well as continue to equip them with the knowledge and skills needed for the next stage of learning.
The school email address will enable you to maintain contact with school during our closure. Please note that this will be checked by administration staff between 9am and 3pm. Any emails sent outside of these times will be responded to the following day. The school number will still be in use with a limited service.
If you are unable to access the internet, we hope families will be able to work together to access work but please get in touch if you are experiencing problems and we will make every effort to respond.
We will keep families informed regarding updates to our situation via our website and also email communications. Please check your junk folder on your emails in case messages are routed there.
We are considering the advice from government regarding arrangements from Monday the 23rd March for the children of key workers and vulnerable groups and will update any plans as more information becomes available.
We will make every effort to ensure our provision will continue in a way that is manageable for all families.

In light of the above advice if your child develops symptoms please do not send them into school for at least 7 days from the first day. So that we can ensure the safety of all our children please continue to contact the office to report your child's absence, simply advising us that they are in self isolation, on 01761 432283 or email email@example.com.
As of today, there are no known positive COVID-19 cases in our School community. If this situation arises, we will follow Government Public Health England advice on how to manage the school at the time and will advise you accordingly.
Increased sanitisation cleaning is taking place around the campus during and after the school day. This includes areas most commonly touched such as desks, furniture and door handles. Toilets are being cleaned regularly and soap is being replenished. Staff are reminding students of the importance of handwashing for 20 seconds with soap. Please help us with this by reminding your child to respect basic personal hygiene including coughs and sneezes - catch it, bin it, kill it!
At this stage an instruction to close schools does not appear to be imminent, but could happen in the future as part of the "delay stage" of the virus management response.
The school is working on contingencies to deliver learning opportunities to students during such a closure period, using the school websitte as well as activities that will not require use of IT equipment in the home. We do appreciate that not all our students will have access to IT equipment at home.
If it arises, a closure notice may come at short notice and, if you have not already, we ask you to think about your preparations for such if this eventuality arises. To help us to be able to communicate effectively with you as parent/carer, please can we remind you to update us if your contact details have changed eg: mobile phone, email address. There is no advice to stop UK based school trips and activities such as Year 6 Camp or class trips. We will follow Government instruction in this matter and advise parents/carers if the situation changes.
We appreciate that this period is an anxious time. Please can we ask all members of the community to remain courteous and patient with school staff as we deal with the developing situation. We will advise you of any changes as soon as we are able to.
