Spanish is taught at Kilmersdon starting in Key stage 2 (year 3) through to the end of year 6. The curriculum leader currently teaches the foundation stages of Spanish to years 3 and 4.
Above all, the aim is to foster a love of learning a foreign language and the confidence to use what they learnt. The children can aim to progress to secondary school with a sound foundation in a M.F.L as a starting point.
The programme of study is in line with the National Curriculum requirements that aims to :
enable the children to understand and respond to spoken and written Spanish.
speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity.
write at varying lengths for different purposes using a variety of grammatical structures.
appreciate a range of writing in Spanish.
The delivery of the curriculum is through a wide range of methods including videos, songs, traditional oral teaching methods focused on speaking and opportunities to practice writing in Spanish.
The expectation is to acquire a cumulative bank of vocabulary which is constantly revisited and expanded and to build the children’s confidence in handling that vocabulary in both oral and written scenarios.
